WHY?

The findings from my long-distance hiker survey indicate:

  • Hikers will stop hiking a trail and not recommend it to others if:

    • 12% - There is a lack of trail maintenance.

    • 6% - There is a lack of directional signage.

  • 2% of hikers think a lack of trail maintenance will be the most important impact on long-distance trails in the future.

  • Hikers are motivated to act on behalf of a trail because:

    • 10% - They want to be useful.

    • 10% - They have a service/skill that can make a difference.

    • 9% - A person or organization asked for their help.

WHAT DOES DEVELOPING A VOLUNTEER PLAN INCLUDE?

Volunteer plans can be custom tailored to your needs and goals.

  • I have developed and led volunteer trail maintenance trips and programs for over 15 years and will use that experience to create your volunteer plan by:

    • Evaluating the current volunteer program and identify changes and opportunities to enhance the program.

    • Designing a new volunteer program for your organization

    • Developing all related materials around things like risk assessments, safety protocols, training materials, tools training and more.

    • Developing a system to assess the current trail maintenance needs along the trail.

    • Developing relationships with agency partners to identify trail work projects.

    • Developing volunteer materials for projects

    • Providing access to the grant database program for help funding this work (coming spring of 2025).
